P0103
Moderate severityMass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Circuit High Input
Most cars switch to a backup fuel strategy when the MAF signal looks wrong, so they keep running — but often with a rough idle, hesitation or stalling. Drive gently, avoid situations where you need sudden power, and get it checked soon.
Stop driving if: the engine stalls, hesitates badly when pulling into traffic, or the check engine light starts flashing.
What does the P0103 code mean?
The P0103 code means the signal from your mass air flow (MAF) sensor is higher than it should be. The MAF sensor sits in the intake between the air filter and the throttle body and measures how much air is entering the engine. The computer uses that number to decide how much fuel to inject.
When the MAF signal is stuck too high — more than the engine could physically be drawing in at that moment — the computer knows the reading can’t be trusted and sets P0103. This is usually an electrical problem (wiring or connector) or a sensor that has failed. Its opposite is P0102, low input.
Can you keep driving with a P0103 code?
Usually yes, carefully. When the computer distrusts the MAF, it estimates airflow from other sensors instead. The car will often drive, but you may notice a rough idle, hesitation, stalling, poor fuel economy or even black smoke from running rich.
Be careful merging or pulling into traffic, where a stumble could be dangerous. If the engine stalls repeatedly or the check engine light starts flashing, stop driving and have it towed or repaired.
What causes a P0103 code?
Listed in the order most shops would check them — cheapest and most likely first, not as statistical odds. The real cause varies by year, make, model and engine.
- Loose, corroded or damaged MAF sensor connectorCheck 1st
- MAF sensor contaminated by dirt or oil from an over-oiled air filterCheck 2nd
- Wiring short to voltage in the MAF circuitCheck 3rd
- Failed MAF sensorCheck last
How to diagnose a P0103 (check these first)
Rule out the cheap causes before buying a new sensor:
- Scan for other codes. Several sensor codes at once can point to a shared wiring or power problem rather than the MAF itself.
- Unplug the MAF connector, check for corrosion or bent pins, and plug it back in firmly until it clicks.
- Remove the MAF sensor and clean it with dedicated MAF cleaner spray. Never touch the sensing wires, and let it dry fully before reinstalling.
- If you use an oiled aftermarket air filter, check that it isn’t over-oiled — excess oil can coat the sensor.
- With a scanner, watch the live MAF reading at idle. If it stays abnormally high after cleaning, test the wiring for a short to voltage before replacing the sensor.
P0103 repair cost
Costs vary a lot by vehicle and region. These are typical US ranges including parts and labor — treat them as a ballpark for the conversation with your shop, not a quote.
| MAF sensor cleaning | $10 – $100 |
| Connector or wiring repair | $100 – $300 |
| MAF sensor replacement | $150 – $400 |
Tools & parts that help
A scanner with live data shows whether the MAF reading is truly stuck high, and a can of MAF sensor cleaner is a cheap first step. If the sensor really has failed, you can then price a replacement for your exact vehicle.

P0103 — Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to drive with a P0103 code?
Usually, with care. The car often runs on a backup strategy, but it may stall or hesitate. Avoid situations where you need sudden power, and stop driving if it stalls repeatedly.
Can cleaning the MAF sensor fix P0103?
Sometimes, if the sensor is contaminated. But P0103 is more often electrical, so check the connector and wiring too. If the code returns after cleaning, the sensor or its circuit needs testing.
What’s the difference between P0102 and P0103?
P0102 means the MAF signal is too low. P0103 means it is too high. Both point at the MAF sensor or its wiring, but high input is more often a wiring short or a failed sensor.
How much does it cost to fix a P0103?
From about $10 for MAF cleaner to $150 to $400 for a new MAF sensor, depending on your vehicle.
