P0446
Low severityEvaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction
P0446 is an emissions code. The car will usually drive normally, but it will fail an emissions or smog test while the code is active, and a blocked vent can make the tank hard to fill — the pump keeps clicking off.
Stop driving if: you smell strong fuel vapour, or fuel overflows or spits back when you refuel.
What does the P0446 code mean?
The P0446 code means your car’s computer found a problem with the EVAP vent control — the valve that lets fresh air in and out of the charcoal canister. The vent valve normally stays open so the fuel tank can “breathe,” and closes during self-tests so the computer can check the system for leaks.
If the vent valve won’t open or close when commanded, its circuit has an electrical fault, or the vent path is blocked, the computer sets P0446. On many vehicles the vent valve sits near the fuel tank or charcoal canister, underneath the car, where dirt, water and debris can reach it.
Can you keep driving with a P0446 code?
Yes, in most cases. P0446 doesn’t damage the engine and usually doesn’t change how the car drives. You’ll fail an emissions inspection, and you may notice the fuel pump nozzle clicking off repeatedly because air can’t escape the tank while you fill it.
Try not to top off the tank after the pump clicks off — overfilling pushes liquid fuel into the charcoal canister, which is one of the common ways this system gets damaged in the first place.
What causes a P0446 code?
Listed in the order most shops would check them — cheapest and most likely first, not as statistical odds. The real cause varies by year, make, model and engine.
- Vent valve or vent filter blocked by dirt, mud or insect nestsCheck 1st
- Damaged or corroded wiring or connector at the vent valveCheck 2nd
- Faulty EVAP vent valve (solenoid)Check 3rd
- Damaged or fuel-saturated charcoal canisterCheck last
How to diagnose a P0446 (check these first)
Start with the cheap, visible problems before replacing parts:
- Scan for other EVAP codes. P0446 with leak codes (P0442, P0455) often points to the vent valve not sealing.
- Find the vent valve and its fresh-air filter (usually near the charcoal canister or fuel tank) and check for mud, debris or insect nests blocking the opening.
- Inspect the wiring and connector at the vent valve for corrosion, broken wires or a loose plug — this area takes a lot of road spray.
- Use a scan tool to command the vent valve open and closed. You should hear it click; if it doesn’t, test the valve and its circuit.
- If the valve tests good, have the charcoal canister checked for damage or liquid fuel.
P0446 repair cost
Costs vary a lot by vehicle and region. These are typical US ranges including parts and labor — treat them as a ballpark for the conversation with your shop, not a quote.
| Clean blocked vent filter or valve | $0 – $100 |
| Wiring or connector repair | $100 – $300 |
| Vent valve replacement | $100 – $300 |
| Charcoal canister replacement | $250 – $700 |
Tools & parts that help
An OBD-II scanner lets you check for related EVAP codes and confirm the repair by clearing the code. Many P0446 fixes are simply cleaning debris out of the vent valve or filter, so look before you buy parts.

P0446 — Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to drive with a P0446 code?
Yes, in most cases. It is an emissions code and usually does not affect driving, but your car will fail an emissions test until it is fixed.
Why does the gas pump keep clicking off?
A blocked or stuck-closed vent valve stops air escaping from the tank while you fill it, so the nozzle shuts off early. It is a common symptom with P0446.
Can a gas cap cause P0446?
Not usually. A gas cap problem normally sets leak codes like P0455 or P0457. P0446 is about the vent valve and its circuit.
How much does it cost to fix a P0446?
Sometimes nothing, if the vent is just blocked with debris. A new vent valve usually costs $100 to $300, and a charcoal canister $250 to $700.

General guidance based on the standard SAE definition of the P0446 code. A real diagnosis depends on your make, model, year, engine and other symptoms. This is not a substitute for a professional inspection — when in doubt, have a technician confirm the cause before replacing expensive parts.
